With the emerging trend of smart phones, local searches have become viable to find things located near us that are easily reachable. Thus it has become an important part of vertical search not just in Google but in other search engines as well.However this has impacted negatively on the conversation ratio of websites ranking on general keywords.
One of the main reasons why the conversion ratio for general keywords is decreasing as users are more geo-specific and so if they plan to search for a new coffee shop they prefer to mention their location along with the search term. So now the search terms have more likely changed from, say, “coffee shop” to “coffee café in Edmonton” or “Coffee shop in <name of area/place>”. Another reason why geo-specific searches are getting most of the spotlight as they have become a prominent part of Google first page SERPS that looks something like this:

Since people are more inclined towards local searches, it has become fundamental for businesses (local businesses) to be active on local forums like Map listings, local business data aggregators and more.

Classified list is useful. Sulekha is more like business directory instead of classifieds. They started with directory service and moved to mix of directory and classifieds. Even today it is more like directory.
