SEO has been widely misunderstood and suffered criticism for very long. Like many of you this is pretty common to me that developers and designers in my circle come to me and ask why companies are paying more to SEOs as compared to developers and designers, when all SEO have to do is just submissions and may be some Meta data changes.
As I am not a business owner so my take on the salary part will be personal but I believe this is too stupid to say that SEO is just copy paste and there is no logical, creative and technical involvement in it.
SEO is not what you think:
Whoever comes up with this comment actually don’t know the real ground and scope of SEO. Apparently, SEO is nothing about copy paste it’s more about creating connection with people, comprehend and present them exactly with what they are looking for.
SEO is hell lot more than just submitting directories. It is actually about using maximum inbound channels to grab audiences’ attention without interrupting them. SEO is about showing expertise to the targeted audience through a blend of creative, persuasive and technical writing then just mass submission of spinned articles to 100s of article directories.
Moreover, SEOs tends to optimize conversion rate for company that can bring in more clients rather than just getting keyword rankings on the 1st page of Google. SEO is not a science of Meta Data only but the process actually involves UX and UI that have a direct impact on business conversions.
SEO is not technical:
The term technicality holds a different meaning for everyone so it depends upon your scale to measure SEO and it technicalities. According to a general perspective, a technical person is one who knows code languages and design related stuff. If this is your definition then all I must say it is a narrow, actually way too narrow!
If I agree on your definition then all other work being a developer and designer is non-technical? So are you trying to tell me that being a journalist is not a technical job, after all they are not well versed with computers but they are good at their own game that is using the power of words wisely and creating influential news. For a journalist technicality is being good with using words that can empower their piece of writing. Similarly for SEO the word embraces a different meaning.
In short, definition of technical is different for every industry, As an SEO we have learned the technicalities of writing, publishing and yes to an extent code and design.
SEO is no logic game:
Actually, to an extent you are right! SEO isn’t really a logic game! Instead it is more about cracking the logic of the targeted audience and presents them exactly what they are looking for at the right time. In order to do that one need to run tests, do researches build hypothesis and gather market data to come closer to the want of the target audience.
The Salary Point!
This has to do more with the structure of the company as per my opinion. If you are in a company based on SEO services offered to client then obviously they will get more importance and more salaries but if it’s the other way around the scenario would be a bit different. I even know many agencies who do not offer digital marketers as much salaries as they offer to skilled designers and developers.
Salaries have more to do with the marketing plan that each individual company is following so it’s useless to discuss in general.
This post was not to prove the importance of SEO over design or development but I guess the comparison between designer/developer and SEO is lame in my opinion. They are two different professions who hold different challenges and risk factors involved.
